Properties and benefits of White Hawthorn
White hawthorn or albar is a deciduous tree or shrub in the Rosaceae family. It is closely related to the Celts and the mysticism that surrounds all its folklore, to the point that it is considered a sacred tree. The active part of this shrub are the flowering tops, which contain flavonoids and proanthocyanidins. Of the former, heterosides, apigenin and quercitin stand out; Pynogenoles stand out of the latter. Caffeic and chlorogenic acids, aromatic amines, triterpenic acids and mineral salts are also present.
Traditionally, hawthorn has been used as a cardiotonic and antiarrhythmic, since it increases the cardiac contraction force (inotrope) and decreases the excitability of the heart (negative batmotrope). Cardioprotective and antioxidant, thanks to the inhibition of the activity of some enzymes and the synthesis of substances in the heart muscle. Main indications. Mild heart failure. Disorders of cardiac or circulatory functions. Prevention of angina pectoris. Arrhythmias of nervous origin.
