Compared to lactobacilli, bifidobacteria are more likely to reap benefits, probably because bifidobacteria reside in greater numbers in the human colon than lactobacilli and have a greater preference for oligosaccharides. Precisely in the two symbiotic supplements, the genus Bifidobacterium is represented by three species, so the prebiotic contribution in the form of inulin is highly consistent. The concept of "fiber" admits different definitions and so we can speak of dietary fiber, such as the set of non-digestible carbohydrates and lignin present in foods of plant origin, or functional fiber, consisting of isolated, non-digestible carbohydrates, which have beneficial effects in humans.
