Properties and benefits of Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body commonly known as the sleep hormone, because it is responsible for regulating day and night cycles or sleep-wake cycles (stage 1 non-REM sleep). Its scientific name is N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine and it is synthesized from an essential amino acid, tryptophan, through serotonin.

Melatonin contributes:

A reduction in the time needed to fall asleep. The beneficial effect is obtained with an intake of 1 mg of melatonin shortly before going to sleep.
To alleviate the subjective feeling of jet lag. The beneficial effect is obtained with a minimum intake of 0.5 mg to be taken shortly before going to bed on the first day of travel and a few days after arrival at the destination.

How to take Melatonin?

Dissolve one tablet in the mouth half an hour before going to bed.
