Description
Guggul (Commiphora mukul), Ayurvedic medicinal plant. Guggul interferes with lipoprotein formation and lipid turnover. Guggul increases fecal excretion of bile acids (cholic and deoxycholic acids).
Properties and benefits of Guggul (Commiphora mukul)
As an antioxidant: Guggul has protective and antioxidant properties and also plays a role in lipid-lowering and lipid peroxide-reducing activity, xanthine oxidase, and increases superoxide dismutase.
Hypoglycemic: Molecules derived from Guggul extract are capable of reducing insulin resistance in humans. Guggul extract has shown the ability to activate the PPAR family of receptors. PPAR gamma is an important regulator of lipid metabolism, PPAR gamma is suggested to play a role in insulin sensitivity.
At the endocrine level (thyroid): Guggul has been found to have the ability to increase the production of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) (thermogenic activity), which also accounts for its lipid-lowering activity. Thyroid hormones increase carbohydrate metabolism and increase protein synthesis and stimulate the use and composition of lipids.
At the dermal level: Guggulsterones have been shown to be particularly useful in skin problems. Guggulipids and their alcoholic fractions possess a rare quality that provides a dual benefit for skin care, namely anti-sebum and antioxidant activity.
