Amino acids are essential for life, used by the body to build proteins. Glutamine (abbreviated Gln or Q) is one of the 20 amino acids that take part in the composition of proteins and that have referent codons in the genetic code; it is a side chain of a glutamic acid amide, formed by replacing the glutamic acid hydroxyl with an amino functional group. This amino acid in dietary supplement serves so that the exercised muscles do not lose volume. On certain occasions, such as stress, trauma or infection, it can be considered "semi-essential".
