Description
Indication
Vilarnau : A small and avant-garde artisan cava near Barcelona
The noble Vilarnau family settled in the s. XII in this privileged land of the Penedés. Vilarnau is the etymological result of Vila Arnau, that is to say, the Arnau "country house or Domus", which was located in the stately district of the Subirats Castle district and where vineyards were already cultivated in the 12th century. Albert de Vilarnau, name that currently receives the most exclusive cava of the brand, was a very unique personage who made the power of the family grow and even in the s. XIV was one of the patrons of the Santa María de Vilarnau church.
The first cava with the Vilarnau label was born in 1949, when the owner family began to market the cava that the vineyards planted on the “Can Petit i Les Planes de Vilarnau” farm had once produced. Since then, Vilarnau has been associated with a cava with a noble personality, produced under exacting quality standards and which takes care of every detail.
In 1982, it became part of the González Byass winery family. The new winery was located right in the center of the estate and its inauguration took place in October 2005.
Vilarnau Sustainability
At Vilarnau we want to make the best cava with the least possible ecological impact for our planet. We live on the earth and that is why it is in our DNA to take care of it and pamper it to the maximum. The better we treat the land and our environment, the better fruits we will obtain from our vineyards and the better cava we can make.
We are a pioneer winery in calculating the carbon footprint both organizationally and product-wise in order to reduce CO2 emissions, and for this we carried out several actions:
Monitoring of energy consumption
By monitoring each phase of the process we can know the real ecological impact month by month, and we can take the necessary measures to minimize emissions and identify which points we can improve.
For example, with the start-up of the biomass boiler we have managed to reduce the use of fossil fuels by taking advantage of pruning remains and organic matter from the forests in the area.
Water management
Vilarnau is surrounded by a lake of water accumulation, which serves to irrigate the gardens of the winery and vineyards if necessary. The water comes from the rain, which is collected in the 3,500 m2 of cellar cover, and from the treatment plant, so we reuse all the water we use during the process of making the cavas
Waste reduction
In addition to separating, reusing and recycling the waste we generate, we carry out a selection of suppliers according to the containers and packaging they use.
On the other hand, we are creating a composting area to be able to recycle the organic waste that is generated in the cellar on a daily basis.
Sustainable viticulture
Vilarnau enjoys the Organic Viticulture Certificate of the Catalan Council of Organic Agricultural Production, which implies that we have reduced chemical and phytosanitary treatments by 50%. On the other hand, we do not use herbicides, we apply sexual confusion by pheromones to avoid pests and we use organic compost only in the areas that are necessary.
Intake mode
It is ideal to enjoy it at a temperature between 6 and 8 degrees
